Make compound-word practice a little more fun with this Pumpkin Compound Words matching activity! Each pumpkin features two picture words for children to name and say together. When they “say it fast,” they’ll hear the compound word those two pictures create.
Children will then find the stem showing the completed compound word and attach it to the matching pumpkin. It’s a simple, hands-on way to help children understand how two smaller words can come together to make one new word.
Practicing compound words helps build phonological awareness, strengthen vocabulary and teach children to recognize familiar parts within longer words – all important skills that support early reading.
Use this activity in literacy centers, small groups, morning tubs or as a whole-class game. The pumpkins and stems can also be laminated and paired with Velcro dots for repeated use.
